Complementary Courses

Career and Technology Studies (CTS) and Career and Technology Foundations (CTF) provide students with opportunities to expand their knowledge, pursue their interests, and explore potential career paths through a diverse range of subjects. Many CTS courses are designed to equip students with practical, marketable skills that can enhance their employability and career prospects.

Career and Technology Foundations (CTF) Grades 7-9:

Art

Fee: $20.00/Term

In class students will work on basic drawing skills, painting techniques, sculpture creation, and other mixed media projects as assigned.  Students will keep a drawing journal and study components of art history as well as art criticism.  Art course content will be different from Term 1 to Term 4 so students are welcome to take art any terms if they are interested.

Band

*This is an all year course: $70.00/Year

In band class students learn about music and play instruments.  Students will continue to learn the ins and outs of their chosen instrument and learn many new skills and techniques.  Students will have the opportunity to go to Band Camp in the spring, festival in March, perform in the year-end  concert and at other venues, as well go on music-based field trips.  Band is a great opportunity to learn about music and have a lot of fun. 

 

Construction

Fee: $50.00/Term

Construction is a hands-on, project-based course where students will spend most of their time in the construction shop. A mandatory safety component must be successfully completed before students are allowed to participate in the construction lab. As safety is paramount, students must work safely and follow teacher instructions at all times. Students in grade 7, 8, 9 will use appropriate machinery and power tools in the shop. Cost it to help subsidize the cost of lumber, tools and shop supplies necessary for this course.

Cosmetology

Fee: $30.00/Term

Students will explore topics related to Esthetics and Beauty, both for personal use and as a possible future career option. This course is intended to introduce students to and allow them space to discover for themselves basic nail care & art, hair care, braids and basic updo’s, beginner skincare, and age-appropriate makeup application. Fee cost is to help cover the purchase of supplies for this course.

Curling

Fee: $40.00/Term

This course is focused on developing basic curling skills, learning the rules of curling and introducing the four positions on a curling team (first, second, third and skip).  Students will also be competing in a class run bonspiel at the end of the term.

Film Studies

Fee: $10.00/Term

Film studies provide a general introduction to the art and history of the cinema with focus on particular genres and styles found in the past and present.  Lectures, film labs, projects, and discussions will focus on the process of filmmaking as an art form; studies of great directors and film artists; studies of selected film genres; studies of film techniques and styles; the creation and critique of short films. The self-development and socialization of the students are extended by developing an appreciation for the cinema as a traditional art form. 

Fit for Life

*No Fee

Students will explore several aspects of the human body and how fitness plays a key role in health and longevity. Topics covered in this course are Nutrition, Biomechanics, Holistic Health, and Training Principles and Practices. Students will also participate in physical activities in and around the school grounds that will challenge their current state of health.  

Foods

Fee: $50.00/Term

Do you love to cook?  Then the Food’s Class is for you!  In Foods studies, students will learn key concepts in baking, food prep, meal prep & safety. Students will gain knowledge to enhance their daily living skills, and enlighten their potential career opportunities.  Fee is to help cover the cost of food supplies.

Makerspace

Fee: $10.00/Term

The makerspace course focuses on the innovative and creative uses of technology.  Students will learn computer programming (hour of code), robotics (mBots), innovative low-tech challenges and 3D printing.  Students will solve design-based challenges, using technology, by designing, prototyping, and creating a finished product.

Outdoor Education

Fee: $50.00/Term

Seasons will impact course delivery (classroom and outside) This is an option course in which students will participate in both indoor classroom sessions and outdoor activities. Indoor sessions will focus on introducing students to local wildlife, hunting and fishing regulations and techniques, adventure preparation, survival skills and first aid. Outdoor activities will be determined by the weather but could include: fishing, building emergency shelters, fire starting and more.

Photography

Fee: $10.00/Term

This class is designed to give students an understanding of the basics and fundamentals that are needed for modern digital photography, including composition and basic editing. The class will be split into three parts, theory, practical application, and the creation of a portfolio of the student’s best work. 

Sports Leadership: Backyard Games

Fee: $10.00/Term

This is an opportunity to learn about a variety of games that are fun for everyone to play. This course will focus on rules and participation in games typically played in your backyard, at a lake, or any space with a group of friends. A portion of the course will also be spent on learning about game development. Students will develop their own backyard game to be played by their peers.

Sports Leadership: Field Games

Fee: $10.00/Term

People of all ages can substantially improve their health and quality of life by including a moderate amount of physical activity into their daily routines. This course will allow students to acquire skills through a variety of developmentally appropriate movement activities such as baseball, slow-pitch, flag football, or soccer.  Strong evidence exists that physical activity contributes to the overall well-being of individuals. 

Stategic Games: Minecraft

*No Fee

Students will have the opportunity to work collaboratively with their peers as they plan for, design, and build a creation of their choice in Minecraft Education. The project is open ended and allows students to create something out of their own interest and imagination. Students will be responsible for providing planning documents for their builds, as well as a write-up about some of their most interesting build features and design choices.

Textile Arts - Fashion

Fee: $50.00/Term

Do you want to explore Fashion and Textile Arts?  Look at how Fashion and accessories have evolved and where it can take you next.  Come and be creative and learn the basics of sewing skills while being creative.

Career and Technology Studies (CTS) Grades 10-12:

Aboriginal Studies 20

Prerequisites: Social Studies 10

Students will be delving deeper into cultural change as it relates to the Métis, treaties, legislation and schooling. This course is experiential in nature (including field trips and presentations by Elders and the community), and builds understandings of Aboriginal peoples of Canada and Indigenous peoples of the world in the context of history and contemporary issues.

Art 10/20/30

Students will practice and refine drawing, sketching, and composition skills and techniques as well as extend knowledge and familiarity of design elements and principles to develop personal style in two and three dimensional images.  They will use art criticism to analyze and evaluate your work and the work of others and at higher levels investigate technology’s impact on the artist’s intentions and production and question sources of images that are personally relevant.

Ceramics 10

Students will become familiar with a variety of ceramic processes and techniques from shaping and manipulating a wet medium through to the product of the kiln, and learn traditional craftsmanship and become knowledgeable about ceramics through studio practice.

Construction 10/20/30

Students will learn about skills, techniques, safe tool and equipment operating practices and procedures for use in cabinet making and residential construction.  Learn to read drawings, integrate skills and develop confidence in current construction methods while working on construction projects.

Comm Tech 10/20/30

Students will discover and develop skills using various forms of media, including animation, print, photography and audio/visual.  This course may include specializations in web design, animation, photography, or video and film.

Cosmetology 10

Students will learn about basic hair, skin and nail care services and gain knowledge and practical experience while working on mannequins and classmates.  Students will practice advanced techniques and gain the confidence needed to work with clients and gain client service experience. Students will perform other services of a cosmetologist, which may include esthetic services like manicures, make-up application, facials, or facial hair removal. 

Fashion Studies 10/20/30

Students will design, manufacture, and market clothing and other textile products, as well as study the history, sociology and economics of clothing and textile arts. 

Financial Management

Students will learn about personal financial literacy and general accounting principles and explore small businesses and venture planning.

Foods 10/20/30

Students will learn about food production, food preparation and meal planning. Understand nutrition and healthy food choices, food costs and economics, and safe food handling techniques and may participate in cooking, baking and food presentation for personal enjoyment and for the food service industry.

Forensics 25/35

Prerequisites: 

  • Science 10 or Science 14 for Forensic Studies 25 
  • Forensic Studies 25 for Forensic Studies 35 

Students will connect scientific concepts and technologies related to solving crime and learn about topics like crime scene investigation, forensics, toxicology and ballistics, police protective equipment, criminal profiling, arson and police service canines. 

Information Processing 10/20/30

Students will become proficient with the use of Office applications.

Instrumental Music (Band) 10/20/30

Students will develop musical knowledge including: aural skills, technical skills, theory, musical style and history as well as enhance musical skills including performance of scales, studies, sight-reading and a variety of repertoire. 

Intro to Health Pathways 10

Students will learn about the human body by examining anatomy and the function of body systems, will understand the resources to support health and wellness of individuals in the health care context and develop skills in first aid, CPR and safety necessary for careers in emergency response and medical technology.

Musical Theatre 15/25/35

Students will learn in an interactive environment of integrated study in dance, drama, technical theatre and vocal music for students who seek the challenge of working through the creative process to performance where they will develop fundamental skills and discipline to become a proficient performer and artist in musical theatre and learn to evaluate and effectively reflect on your personal work and the work of your peers in live theatre production.

Psychology

  • General Psychology 20 - Students will gain a broad understanding of the many topics of study in psychology, including learning and thinking, conflicts and disorders, as well as career opportunities 
  • Personal Psychology 20 - Students will explore psychology from the perspective of the individual in greater depth, with a focus on elements of personality, behaviour, intelligence and perception 
  • Experimental Psychology 30 - Students will expand research and data analysis skills using methods situated within the field of psychology. Students will inquire into issues of importance to psychologists and design a research project 
  • Abnormal Psychology 35 - Prerequisites: Personal Psychology 20 or General Psychology 20 - Students will learn about the historical emergence of the field of abnormal psychology and the accompanying theories to describe the cause

Physical Education 20/30

Prerequisite: successfully complete the preceding courses for 20 and 30 levels 

Students will engage in more activities that promote lifelong physical activity as well as connect and engage with lifelong active living and wellness

Sports Med 20/30

Prerequisite: Intro to Health Pathways 10

May include coursework from a variety of occupational pathways as well as understand sports injury and practice skills used in sports injury management.

Sports Performance

Students will develop skills useful for sports performance training, coaching, leading fitness and recreation activities.  Understand sports injury and practice skills used in sports injury management.

Registered Apprenticeship Program (RAP)

Prerequisites: 

  • successfully complete Workplace Safety Systems (HCS 3000) 
  • recommended Workplace Safety Practices (HCS 3010) 
  • must be 15 years of age or older 

Students will gain experience as an apprentice in a skilled trade of interest and earn high school credits with training conducted by qualified journey people.

Wildlife 10/20/30

Students will learn about our relationship with the natural environment and consider the impact of our pursuits on species and ecosystems.

Work Experience 15/25/35

Prerequisites: 

  • successfully complete Workplace Safety Systems (HCS 3000)
  • Must be 15 years of age or older and enrolled in high school 4 | 

Students will gain hands-on opportunities in various occupational areas, develop employability skills necessary for success during and after high school.
